We began growing organic vegetables, herbs and flowers in our backyard around 1980. As our knowledge about organic farming and healthy living choices grew, we decided to relocate from our Southeast Houston neighborhood to four acres of land in East Texas.
After years of cultivating organic farming practices, in 1989 our modest farm was the first of it’s kind in East Texas to be Certified Organic. We found ourselves opening our home and gardens to those interested in a healthier way of living, and eventually we sponsored an Herb and Health Festival on the farm. The annual festival drew crowds of more than 300 people throughout the weekend. Rita conducted tours of the gardens and gave advice on growing and using herbs, while Douglas demonstrated organic gardening techniques. Before natural and organic food choices were so prevalent, we belonged to a natural food coop that delivered bulk orders to our small town. Sometimes, we would supplement those orders with a trip to Whole Foods in Dallas. We’d pack our two daughters and a couple of ice chests in our van and make a family day trip out of the experience. Healthy living is our lifestyle.
With 20 years devoted to natural and holistic living, the time has come to once again share our passion with our community. Opening up Rita’s Natural Food Market in New Braunfels, Texas is watching a dream come true. It is truly our pleasure to share with you healthy and affordable options for natural living.
